Gennadius Library, East Gardens

This is the historic gardens of Athens’ main rare books library, belonging to the American School of Classical Studies. By the late ‘90s the garden was run down and in need of repair. The basic structure was provided by the Olin Partnership. What remained was the need to plant the understory and ground level, in an economical but respectful way.

The garden was separated into zones, so as to provide quiet character as well as a multiplicity of experience in a relatively small space. Marble architectural elements from an earlier phase of the building were placed in the garden so as to suggest an archaeological storage site.

The scope included planting design and construction supervision.
