Play spaces are themselves an opportunity to play. This pool hall in Hull is a set of boxes washed out on the beach, a new boat ready to sail from Hull’s historic boatyards. Inspired by the consistent design of art deco, its module is the pool table. The top of the pool tables establish a plane that slices the building, shifting its geometry, while the table’s size sets up a tatami system in plan. Circulation is a three-dimensional figure-8, so that one can travel eternally around the space without having to turn back.
