Thomas Doxiadis

Director
Architect, Landscape Architect ASLA
B.A. MArch, MLA Harvard University

Thomas is a Greek architect, landscape architect, and founder of doxiadis+.  His work is characterized by an ethos of respect, inquisitiveness, and creativity.  He is drawn by the interconnection of all scales, all natural and manmade elements, and all living things.  He believes design is the pursuit of a dynamic balance, the creation of beautiful systems in which all stakeholders can thrive, and which are open to change.

Thomas was born in 1970 in Athens, where he lived until 1988. He received his B.A. from Harvard University (Magna Cum Laude, 1992), earning academic honors such as the Harvard College Scholarship, the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize, the Rudolf Arnheim Prize, and the Penny White Award. He went on to study Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Harvard University (M.Arch, M.L.A., 1998). His undergraduate thesis, Kastanitsa, focused on the historic Tsakonian village, while his graduate thesis, Designing for Democracy, explored the relationship between spatial form and political function.  In 1998–99, he worked in the New York offices of Costas Kondylis. He returned to Greece in 1999 to complete his military service and subsequently worked for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games Organizing Committee in the areas of masterplanning, landscape, and the Look of the City. At the same time, he served as an advisor to the Organization for the Planning of Athens (1999–2001). From 2003 to 2007, he was a visiting lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the University of Patras and the University of Thessaly. In 1999, Thomas founded the private practice that later became doxiadis+.

Thomas has written and spoken at conferences on topics related to ecology, landscape, and urbanism. He is one of the initiators of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR program, Greece’s national initiative for climate change adaptation, and leads its Landscapes sub-program as a member of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET). Through ELLET, since 2005, Thomas has been actively involved in the protection and management of natural and historic landscapes, biodiversity, and climate change.
